Sustainability
Mornington Peninsula Group understands that our actions are important to our customers, suppliers, community and the environment and recognise that everything we buy and sell has health, environmental and social impacts.
We are committed to doing what we can towards minimising our environmental impact by implementing the most sustainable practices we are able to at any given time. As a small business, we hope that you will be patient with us as we grow and continually improve the sustainability of our business.
We have made a conscious decision to focus on locally made/sourced products and packaging and work with other local businesses and professionals whenever we can to support our community and economy.
Where possible, we are partnering with Mornington Peninsula-only suppliers, who share similar values to our own and are trying to use the most environmentally friendly practices they can.
Sustainable shopping requires all of us to make conscious and ethical decisions and starts with consideration of the raw materials used to create a product, the manufacturing process, packaging and ultimately the disposal of each item as well as any transportation required throughout its lifecycle.
In Australia, only 56% of all packaging waste is recycled. For plastic, this figure is less than a third. Most of the remaining materials end up in landfill, resulting in huge costs for our economy and environment.
Our packaging is produced in Melbourne from renewable and biodegradable materials that can be reused, recycled or composted and our printing is done in Melbourne using 100% recycled paper and vegetable-based inks.
A big part of shopping sustainably is shopping locally as much as possible. This means your money goes to Mornington Peninsula (or at the very least, Victorian / Australian) businesses, and that boosts employment and supports the local economy whilst minimising energy expenditure and emissions associated with transport.
Sustainable gifting is an opportunity for you to choose gifts that actively support causes that you feel passionate about.
To ensure your gift will not only be enjoyed but also have minimal negative environmental impact, ask yourself the following questions when you next purchase a gift:
- Is the gift grown, designed, made or sourced locally, or as locally as possible?
- Is the packaging made from renewable, recycled, recyclable, biodegradable or compostable materials?
- Is the business that you are buying it from committed to environmentally responsible practices?
Wherever possible we encourage you to choose gifts made from recycled materials and/or gifts that are packaged minimally in materials that were manufactured from recycled/renewable and/or biodegradable products that can be reused, recycled or composted. This packaging will have less negative impact on our waterways, air and soil once you have finished with it.
Every time you purchase a product you have the option to shop sustainably. Decide on what’s important to you and start making a difference through your choices. Protect the environment, promote health, and support small local businesses and employment.
Gift Boxes
Manufactured in Melbourne from 80% natural recycled Australian Kraft board and are fully recyclable and/or compostable or can be repurposed.
Linen Picnic Rugs & Tea Towels
Made from 100% premium quality Flax Linen. Linen is widely considered one of the most environmentally responsible fibres. It is made from the cellulose fibres of the flax plant, which grows naturally and requires very little energy and water (the production of which uses up to 10 times less energy and water than cotton and synthetic fibres) to grow and process and because the entire plant is used for production, there is no waste footprint. The flax plant is gentle on the land, and can easily be incorporated into crop rotation cycles to prevent soil depletion, or can be grown in areas that are not suitable for growing food crops, ensuring the environmental impact on the land is minimised. Both Picnic Rugs and Tea Towels are designed on the Mornington Peninsula. Picnic Rugs are handmade locally and Linen Tea Towels are printed locally using high quality eco friendly water-based ink.
Organic Cotton Tea Towels & Tote Bags
Printed in Melbourne on ACO (Australian Certified Organic) Cotton by Susy at Organic print Studio. Susy sources these from what she considers to be the best textile manufacturer in India, who have proven themselves time and again, as a company that believes in equality, corporate and social socially responsibility and ethical business practices. She has visited the workplace on many occasions and has been unable to find fault with their operations.
